LE COLLIER DE MARIAGE
Autrefois, on s'amusait bien aux danses sociales d'Odanak. L'une de ces danses consistait à attraper un jeune homme et une jeune femme et de les coller ensemble. Les danseurs tournaient autour d'eux en les attachant avec une longue corde enfilée de grosses perles, qu'on appelait "le collier de mariage".
Cette histoire m'a été racontée par Fernand, un aîné d'Odanak.
THE WEDDING NECKLACE
In the past, there was good fun at social dances in Odanak. One of these dances involved catching a young man and a young woman and to bind them. The dancers circled around them to tie them up with a long rope strung with large beads called "the wedding necklace."
Fernand, an elder of Odanak told me this story.

Mot abénaki qui veut dire MERCI.
Il se prononce " Oléoné ".
Élie Joubert, un aîné qui parle abénakis, m'a expliqué que cela voulait vraiment dire " c'est un bon cercle ". Ce qui est donné avec bonté circule librement, nous revient, repart vers " l'autre " et voyage indéfiniment dans un cercle invisible.
Abenaki word meaning THANK YOU.
It is pronounced "Olayonay". Elie Joubert, an elder who speaks abenaki, told me
it really meant "it is a good circle." What is given with kindness flows freely, comes back, goes away again towards the "other" and travels indefinitely in an invisible circle.
